BUD MICHEELS

CHANCELOR

Bud Micheels William J. “Bud” Micheels assumed the presidency of Stout State College in 1961 after graduating from Stout in 1941. He was a teacher, writer, researcher, musician, athlete and art lover. In 1964, the name of the institution was changed to Stout State University. In 1971, Stout merged with the University of Wisconsin System, and was renamed University of Wisconsin-Stout. Micheels stepped down as Chancellor in 1972.

JOHN FURLONG

CHANCELOR

John Furlong served as assistant to the president (and later to the chancellor) at Stout from 1963-1985. His first assignment was to establish an art major. Other assignments included restructuring the university as it grew from a small teacher education college to a university. He also established public relations, alumni and foundation offices. The original Furlong Gallery was located in Ray Hall.

ORAZIO FUMAGALI

FOUNDER

In 1964 Fumagalli was brought to UW-Stout to create an art department during the school’s transition from an independent college, traditionally known for home economics and industrial arts, to a branch of the state university system with a varied curriculum. “My job was to create an art department,” Fumagalli said simply. So he did. And that art department is now the biggest undergraduate art program in the UW System, with artists/teachers who exhibit all over the country, as well as in Europe, and teach more than 650 students.

WILLIAM SCHULMAN

FOUNDER OF ART EDUCATION

In 1966 William Schulman founded the art education department at the University of Wisconsin-Stout and headed it from 1966-1992.

  1. STUDIO ART

    FOUNDED IN 1965

    UW-Stout, then Stout State University, began offering its first bachelor degree program in art in 1965. Art classes were offered pre-1965 and dating back to the school’s opening in 1891, but there were no art degree programs. The school of art and design is started throught the introduction of the studio art major. Bud Micheels played a huge role in the push for the founding of the studio art major.
